    A Beginner's
Workshop on the Taxation of U.S. Persons with Offshore Investments or Businesses

    July 10, 2009
    At Ballys,
    Las Vegas, NV

    In Collaboration with

    FreedomFest 2009

U.S. taxpayers who venture offshore are subject to some complex and and often confusing tax rules. Foreign professionals and most U.S. tax advisors are not aware of the complex reporting rules for U.S. owners of foreign entities or investments.   Nor are they familiar with the  advantages and disadvantages of the more popular offshore financial centers (also known as "tax havens").

    The speakers include
    • Marshall Langer, JD
    • Thomas P. McQueen, CPA,
    • Vernon Jacobs, CPA.
Vernon Jacobs will provide a plain English summary of the U.S. tax rules that apply to U.S. citizens or residents with offshore investments, employment or businesses. He will also discuss some of the new tax rules that apply to U.S. citizens who establish a foreign trust and who want to emigrate to another country.

Marshall Langer will review the advantages and disadvantages of the most popular offshore financial centers with respect to their various treaties with the U.S. government and their suitability for emigration.

Thomas P. McQueen will review the tax rules that apply to different types of foreign based legal entities owned by U.S. persons -- such as foreign corporations, International Business Companies, foreign partnerships, foreign limited liability companies and foreign disregarded entities.

All of the speakers will conclude with a half hour Panel to respond to questions from the audience.

Who should attend? Seminar participants would include ....

    • International Entrepreneurs and Investors
    • International (Non U.S.) advisors and trustees with U.S. clients
    • Domestic tax lawyers and accountants with clients that have or are considering international diversification
    • Investment and other advisors of U.S. taxpayers with international investments
The workshop will provide a fast paced, non-technical explanation of the following critical tax issues affecting U.S. persons who venture offshore.

    • U.S. taxation of foreign persons and companies
    • The U.S. tax on the worldwide income of citizens and residents
    • Avoiding double taxation with the foreign tax credit
    • The U.S. tax treatment of most foreign investments
    • Legal ways to save taxes offshore
    • Tax breaks for employees working outside the U.S.
    • How to avoid the passive foreign investment company trap
    • CFC and alternative forms of foreign business
    • The taxation of U.S. shareholders of foreign corporations
    • Some common offshore tax scams and myths
    • Popular foreign financial havens
    • U.S. mutual information exchange treaties
    • U.S. tax information treaties
    • The OECD tax haven blacklist
    • The onerous foreign bank account reporting form
    • Tax compliance and reporting issues
    • Question and answer panel discussions
Don't worry about not being able to understand or to follow the presentations. All of the instructors are experienced and proficient teachers who will explain these concepts in the same way that they explain them to clients. You do not have to be a tax specialist, an attorney or a CPA to understand these presentations. The content of this program is about making decisions as to the best way to structure an offshore investment or business venture.  And -- there will be ample time for an open dialog with the instructors at the end of the afternoon programs.
